Clerkenwell Design Week 2018

Hakwood presents 'Behind Closed Doors'

Hakwood and Shape collaborate to create an interactive installation

Hakwood’s ‘Behind Closed Doors’ will be a 3.2 m high installation designed and fabricated by Shape London. It will be a miniature street-scape that draws inspiration from the Dutch home of Hakwood as well as Shapes’ South East London Design Studio.

Jamie Schreven, PR Director at Hakwood, comments: “We are looking forward to join Clerkenwell Design Week for the third year in a row. With this installation, a village will be created to connect Hakwood and the Shape London family. We hope Behind Closed Doors will trigger you to take a closer look.

Shape London will design a pop up street scene of tall town houses located at the entrance to Spa Fields, in close proximity to the Exmouth Market area. The decorative houses will be clad with Hakwood Wall Tiles where each house will have its own unique pattern sharing the same colour pallet. Each house includes a small door revealing a series of miniature interiors designed by various architects from Shape’s Dragon Fly Place Collective demonstrating that any interior, any décor is an open door for creative inspiration. The hidden rooms will be placed at various heights to invite visitors to interact with the installation and ‘discover’ all the rooms. Each of these miniature scenes will contain Hakwood flooring and be decorated by a different architecture practice from the South East London community to create a true mix of design styles.

Lizzie Webster, Director at Shape London, comments: “We are looking forward to working with Hakwood on this year's installation. We are embracing a truly collaborative partnership which is at the heart of all design projects that we work on. Hakwood is looking at developing some new colours and printing on wood to support us with this. By looking at introducing a new street scene to the Clerkenwell historic urban grain, Hakwood and Shape are celebrating the use of the Hakwood products within a commercial and residential setting. Shape's primary business role as design facilitator and making workshop is highlighted through its collaboration with Architects, who Shape work with to realise their bespoke joinery installations and contracts. Similarly, the relationship between Hakwood and designers of London is celebrated and reinforced with the new miniature street scene.
